In order to provide his patients the best care, Dr. Lanier sought out the most rigorous and advanced surgical training. Few other surgeons have completed both cancer surgery & plastic surgery/microsurgery training - in total 12 additional years of specialization after medical school. He is one of only 3 doctors in the country with dual training in cancer surgery & plastic surgery.

Education

Dr. Lanier is a native of Memphis, TN and earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 2006.

After medical school, he began his surgical training by completing five years of general surgery residency at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

Dr. Lanier was one of a select few surgeons in the nation admitted as a fellow at the National Cancer Institute (National Institutes of Health, NIH). At the world-renowned NIH Surgery Branch, Dr. Lanier completed three years of specialized cancer surgery & immunotherapy training.

In 2015 Dr. Lanier earned his first board certification by the American Board of Surgery.

In 2017 Dr. Lanier finished a second residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the top ranked University of Southern California.

He then moved to Stanford University and completed a second fellowship in microsurgery and complex reconstruction.

In 2019 Dr. Lanier earned his second board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, receiving the highest score in the country on the examination.

Surgical Experience

After his extensive training, Dr. Lanier moved to Orange County and joined the University of California, Irvine as a surgeon and professor. Dr. Lanier has years of experience performing hundreds of surgeries. Notable accomplishments include:

Lymphatic Surgery

Pioneered Orange County's first lymphedema surgery program, including Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction - a rare procedure offered by only a few centers nationwide.

Microsurgery Chief

Led the Microsurgery (advanced reconstruction) division, focusing on intricate procedures including hand surgery, facial reconstruction, and cutting-edge perforator flap techniques.

Sarcoma

Co-founded a specialized center dedicated to the treatment of sarcoma, a rare and often deadly cancer that typically originates in bone or muscle. This center expanded rapidly to become one of the most active sarcoma treatment facilities in the country.

Limb salvage

Restored function and appearance to limbs affected by traumatic injuries through advanced limb salvage and reconstruction surgeries, recognized with an adjuvant position in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Breast reconstruction

Enhanced & modernized breast reconstruction - providing a full spectrum of reconstructive techniques from implants to DIEP flaps. Served on the Breast Cancer Program Leadership Committee as the reconstructive plastic surgery specialist, guiding the development and implementation of comprehensive care plans for breast cancer patients.

Aesthetic Surgery

Offered cutting-edge aesthetic procedures that are not widely available (sub-fascial breast augmentation, drainless tummy tucks), to provide patients with the latest advancements in cosmetic surgery.

Teaching

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Lanier is a dedicated educator - mentoring medical students, residents, & fellows in training. He has a passion for teaching and has played a crucial role in training the next generation of surgical leaders.

  • Founding Program Director of the Breast Reconstruction and Microsurgery fellowship training program.

  • Course instructor teaching other plastic surgeons safe aesthetic injection techniques.

  • Helping other plastic surgeons as instructor at Stanford’s plastic surgery board preparation course.

Other notable accomplishments

  • Conducted cancer treatment trials, translating new cancer discoveries from the laboratory to patients - performing first in people trials in the field of immunotherapy. These treatments were subsequently successful, gained regulatory approval, and are now in wide use treating and curing cancer.

  • Author of multiple medical publications in surgery, cancer, immunotherapy, & plastic surgery.

  • Member of multiple professional societies including the American College of Surgeons (ACS), American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the California Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS), & many more.

  • Invited speaker at California, national, and international meetings.

  • Participant in international outreach trips with the Shriner Children’s Hospital for disadvantaged children with congenital defects and traumatic/burn injuries.

  • Television cameo on Gray’s Anatomy (season 13, episode 16), as an assistant surgeon!

Dr. Lanier is passionate about educating patients, believing that doing so empowers them to take an active role in maintaining their health. He believes the ideal patient-doctor relationship is a partnership, a team working together.

Dr. Lanier lives in Newport Beach - close to the clinic & hospital. He spends his free time with his family and friends as well as his golden retriever. He enjoys cycling, swimming, running, hiking, & traveling.
